With outreach opportunities, public lectures, and science festivals abound, scientists reach by now quite a broad range of interested people, yet the parts of society that would really need exposure to science are difficult to reach. At the same time solid education in the sciences and familiarisation with the scientific method is still underrepresented in education. One possible remedy for these challenges are citizen science projects. We will identify key factors that could make citizen science projects more broadly accessible, develop guidelines for scientists to incorporate them into their routine, and develop a roadmap on how to involve teachers.
